The Arthur Temple College of Forestry (ATCOF) is proud to be a part of the university's mission to educate students in a supportive environment incorporating personal attention and personal challenges, so that our students, by virtue of their depth and breadth of knowledge and the extent of their expertise, may contribute importantly to their chosen field.

Graduate Degrees Offered

The college offers two master degree programs: Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Forestry (M.F.). The newly developed Master of Science in Resoruce Interpretation (MSRI), the first of its kind in the world, has been approved by the SFA Board of Regents. Final approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is under review.

Admission Procedures

SFA is now accepting applications for Spring 2005 admission into the program. A complete application includes (1) an SFA Graduate School application and (2) an Arthur Temple College of Forestry graduate program application. A suggestive application procesure encourages perspective students to:

Admission Requirements include the following:

  • For clear admission, an applicant must have an overall undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 and a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work (each on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum composite score on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of at least 900.
  • Students not meeting the above admission criteria may be admitted with probationary status if they have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and at least a 2.5 GPA on the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework (each on a 4.0 scale) and a composite score on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of at least 800.
  • Provisional admission may be available for students who are unable to provide all of the required documentation prior to the first semester of enrollment, but who based on previous academic performance appear to meet the requirements for clear admission (2.8 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework).
  • Exceptions to the above admission requirements may be made on the recommendation of the Graduate Council to the Dean of the College of Forestry following a written appeal by the applicant to the Graduate Council.

To be admitted to the Ph.D. in forestry degree program, the applicant must:

  • Hold or qualify for a master's degree in an appropriate area of knowledge from an accredited graduate college or university.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) on the master's degree course work and a minimum score of 1000 on the GRE. Clear admission may be if the GPA is less than 3.5, provided that the composite Verbal and Quantitative GRE score exceeds 1100.
  • Communicate to a Graduate Faculty member in the ATCOF and acquire an agreement to serve as the applicant's major professor before the application process.
